We are a four piece blues/soul band based in Madrid featuring musicians from England, Wales, USA and Spain. We are moving into some elements of jazz and, if needed, could incorporate a lot more of this into our repertoire. Individually, we all have impressive professional pedigrees. Rob Thornburn, our most experienced member, has played with the bands of the Joe Cocker and Tina Turner bands and has worked with Dusty Springfield. He has also toured with Kiss, Aerosmith and Rush.

Blues and soul for a modern audience

From the hills of Los Angeles to the valleys of Wales to the cervecerias of Barrio de Concepcion, Soul Mission is carving out its own style of Blues and soul for modern times.

Guitarist Rob Thornburn is the bluesman from LA. For him, the legends have called. He has worked with Dusty Springfield and recorded with the bands of Joe Cocker and Tina Turner. He’s also taken to the road playing support to Kiss and Aerosmith.

In Madrid, his next project would have big reputations to live up to and he needed to find the musicians who could do it. He called Karma and Karma answered.

Bassist Mark McClelland cut his professional teeth in Ireland, touring that damp country relentlessly with a number of hugely popular cover bands before heading off to Madrid. On the way, possibly during spiritual tour of India which might have been a dream, his and Rob’s worlds collided at a powdered water vending machine.

Drummer Tito Ruano Martin also had the right stuff after spells with Malcom Scarpa, Brenga Astur and Los Brujos. But the band needed luck on its side and it came when they won him in a pub competition after guessing that week’s bonus ball.

Now, to three sweaty, roadbitten bluesmen, something sweet had to be added so they went their separate ways in search of the Precious. Rob resolutely headed for Mordor, Mark tirelessly trekked to the Shire and Tito nonchalantly strolled to Malasana. Many were called but Welsh girl Sally Smith was the one. She is one of the most in-demand vocalists on the English music scene in Madrid but it was Soul Mission she finally decided to call home after she was bribed with M&Ms. The chocolate ones. Not the ones with nuts in.

Now they’ve come together, these four are fighting forward with one goal: To take The Blues wherever The Blues takes them.
