- Curriculum Vitae Julien Matei Julien Matei was born in Romania on February 22, 1963. His father, who was a pianist at the Ploiesti City Theatre, began giving Julien piano lessons when he was five. Julien held his first concert at the age of six, and at seven he was enrolled in a school of music. After he had finished his studies in 1981 he defected to Sweden. In 1983 he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Sweden, where he took the solo piano class for Gunnar Hallhagen. He graduated in 1988, playing Rachmaninov...
