Biography
Born in Cairo – Egypt 1972, Amro started playing the piano at 6 year’s old with classical training from his mother piano teacher. His skills as a composer and arranger were first apparent at 15, with his first original composition that he still performs part of today. In 1989, he started his professional music career as a pianist/keyboardist playing in wedding bands, and a soloist in clubs and restaurants. He was soon noticed by established professionals, and began to work as a keyboardist for many Egyptian and Arab pop singers
In 1995, he became a F.I.D.O.F member that gave him a chance to showcase his work as a songwriter and arranger in international song festivals. He had since received the Grand Prix from the Cairo International Song Festival 1998, 2000, the Cavan-Ireland Song Festival, Amnesty International, Billboard Magazine and the Unisong Song Writing Contest.
Amro has become one of the most recognised jazz artists on the Egyptian jazz scene that started to grow in the mid 1990s. He was involved in numerous different jazz projects and ensembles starting with the band Afro Jam, together with bassist Hasan Khalil. In 1999, he made a debut European tour where he was called to join The Yehia Khalil Jazz ensemble with a performance in the International Music Day in Italy, followed by shows all over the globe in different types of events, Jazz festivals and concerts in Bulgaria, Serbia, USA, Turkey, Holland, the Middle east and Japan.
Amro has worked with drummer Ahmad Rabee , Salah Ragab, Gwen Perry Trio, Christine Gordon, Louise Mills, Jay Rodriguez, Tommy Smith, Naseer Shamma, Edmar Castaneda , Theodosii Spassov, Elisa Nocita, Kazumi Watanabe and many other local and international jazz artists in different events ranging from clubs to royal and presidential gala concerts.
His work as a composer extends to a number of music scores for documentaries, short films, and TV serials that have gained excellent credits.
In 2002, he founded the Egyptian jazz group Eftekasat, with a concept to lead the alternative music scene in Egypt. Eftekasat has soon established itself as a leading World jazz fusion ensemble with a series of acclaimed performances around the world.
Amro is currently working as a pianist,composer and a musical director, in the World Music jazz group, Eftekasat . He’s also the director of Cairo International Jazz Festival.
